Voter purges & inactivity
What forces are at play?
Harmon became a central figure in a dispute over Ohio’s process for removing people from voter rolls after periods of inactivity and missed confirmation notices. Voter-list maintenance serves a legitimate administrative purpose, but it raises a difficult question: when does cleaning a list become a system that removes still-eligible citizens who simply vote infrequently?
How can this shape elections?
A purge often becomes visible only when a person arrives to vote and discovers the registration is gone. That timing matters because the opportunity to fix the problem may be limited. The policy tradeoff is between accurate records and the risk of wrongful removal, and the effects can differ across groups depending on mobility, mail reliability, and patterns of participation.
Carry these questions into the activity
- What rule, barrier, or source of power matters most from this person’s point of view?
- Who gains political voice — and who loses it — because of the way the election system works here?
